Encourage Someone: One Year Later

My dad has been gone for a year now. We still don’t have answers. We still don’t have a coroner’s report. We likely will never know what really happened.

Last year, shortly after my dad’s death, I wrote a blog post titled, Let’s Talk. My goal was to get involved in the conversation about mental health. I have tried to do just that, not only through my blog, but through all areas of my life. I have had many conversations about mental health. I intend to continue to talk about mental health. And just a heads up…Bell Let’s Talk Day is January 27th this year, you may have already heard some of their commercials.

This year, I have been thinking more and more about little ways I can support the people I care about, as well as the parents I meet through my photography work with Ronald McDonald House and peer support at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. We all deal with stress and we all handle it differently. Something as simple as a note from someone you care about can turn your whole day…your week…even your outlook on life around. That’s why this year I want to highlight the Hello Happiness Card Company.

Hello-008

I came across this company at the photography conference I attended back in October. I was at a session put on by photographer Jenny Solar where she spent a lot of time talking about how your own family values and your happy family habits can influence the way you photograph other families. I was so inspired by her talk that I went home and added the following question to my storytelling session questionnaire: Are there any everyday moments that you already know you want documented? For example in our family group hugs and dog piles are pretty special to us.

Anyways back to the point…the Hello Happiness Card Company was created by Jenny and her husband, Josh, who basically wanted to send love out into the world. Their mission statement says:

WE BELIEVE OUR WORDS ARE A POWERFUL
FORCE OF ENCOURAGEMENT.
WE BELIEVE WE CAN USE OUR WORDS
TO SHOW UP FOR THOSE WE LOVE WITH
COMPASSION, EMPATHY AND UNDERSTANDING.
WE BELIEVE WE EXIST TO LOVE AND BE LOVED.
WE BELIEVE WITH OUR WORDS,
WE CAN MAKE THE WORLD A MORE BEAUTIFUL PLACE.

That is a pretty powerful message. But you also need to check out their video because they explain their whole idea and how it came about so much better than I can.

How do you feel after seeing that? Don’t you feel like writing to someone? So, the other thing I did when I got home from Click Away was I signed up for their You Are Loved monthly subscriptions (and even sucked up the horrendous exchange rate!)  Cause let’s be honest I love getting mail and I wanted cards that I could send out for no reason other than I wanted to tell someone I was thinking of them. I just used one today that had a hand drawn picture of a calculator with the message, “You can count on me.”

Hello-006

Here are a couple of my favourite cards that I haven’t sent yet.

Finally, there is a statement the Solar’s have on their website that really rings true for me.

WE’VE EXPERIENCED FIRST HAND HOW OUR WORDS CAN CHANGE SOMEONE’S LIFE.

My next set of cards are on their way up here to Edmonton as I write this. I have a couple earmarked to go out already. I wish I could send one to my dad.
