Shoestring Bourbon Spreads the Love

This beautiful lady called me about a month ago to let me know that she and her band, Shoestring Bourbon, were in the beginning stages of planning a show at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club benefitting the Canadian Mental Health Association.

As you read this post you are hopefully hearing a recording of Bre singing I’ll Fly Away at my dad’s service in January (not hearing the song? scroll up and click play). I’m assuming if you have found this blog you probably already know some of the story of my dad, but if not check out my post; Let’s Talk.

With Kane at 11 months.

You might also recognize this shot from an article in the Times Colonist on January 28th.

As I’m sure you will agree Bre did an amazing job at Christ Church Cathedral and now she has stolen my heart again by setting up this event…

Bre also set up a donation page through the Canadian Mental Health Association’s website. On it she wrote,

“Earlier this year, my friend endured the tragic sudden loss of her father. At a time when no one is expected to be strong, she stood up and spoke about mental health. She wishes for us all to keep talking about this important issue and she has truly inspired me to help. It’s time for us to acknowledge to ourselves and to those around us when our mental health is suffering.

Let’s keep talking about mental health awareness! It’s time for us to change the perception of what is “normal”. It’s time to stop seeing depression as “weakness” that we should simply ignore. Take a look around and you may find that your brother, your friend or your co-worker suffers in silence. It’s time to talk about it.”

These shots are from Shoestring Bourbon’s CD release party last year.

Bre, I love you. I love that you are talking about mental health. I love that you are singing to raise awareness. I love that the dates worked out and that I will be in Victoria for the show! I also want to send out a big thank you to the rest of Shoestring Bourbon. Boys, I don’t know you well, but it means so much to me that you have chosen to do this. I am ecstatic that I will be able to attend. And I am spreading the word.
