Meet Mackenzie. This little warrior turned one on September 2nd and just prior to her birthday underwent a second open heart surgery to repair a coarctation of the aorta.
Mackenzie’s first heart surgery occurred when she was just 18 days old and she was one of 15% of cases that required a second surgery due to a build up of scar tissue. Unfortunately, during this most recent surgery, Mackenzie’s phrenic nerve was paralyzed, which has effected her diaphragm and voice. But, when I met her and her mom, Natasha, at Ronald McDonald House they were both in high spirits and preparing to go home to Whitehorse the following week.
